Castle of Otranto
In Castle of Otranto, women do not have many options and the options are ususally offered and controlled by men. In the story, women do not get to chose whom to be with. Manfred, the tyrant, even divorced his wife on his own and decided to marry Isabella. They are treated more like a property instead of an actual human being. Even though this is the situation, Walpole still promote romance. However, the romance all turns out to be tragedy at the end.

I agree with your idea completely. Throughout the story marriage seemed to be forced upon everyone with little chance of happiness. The idea of arranged marrages that the father set up for his daughter is what drove most of the story. The father's did not show any motion towards their own flesh and bloods happiness, but looked at their daughters as more of a business deal and to better the standards of the house. One reason why the relaitonships within the story might have ended with so much pain and tragedy is the rough and harsh relationship the the author had suffered with his very own father.
